Your comfort zone is a useful psychological concept that can help you embrace risk and make changes in your life to lead to personal growth.
Inside your comfort zone exists your daily job, the norms, the things the majority does on a daily basis.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone, means taking risks and opening yourself to possibilities of stress and anxiety.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is one of the top 10 ways to build more confidence for yourself.
We've always been raised to see fear and stress as a means to play it safe.
Things like keep going to the job that we hate.
Dreaming about going on that dream vacation, but never taking steps toward actually going.
Experiencing new activities and seeing new places.
It's your comfort zone, coupled with fear that keeps you in that box of doing what you've always done.
Outside your comfort zone is where you dreams, growth, and living a purposeful life exists.

Here you're going to learn some easy-to-implement hacks to help you break outside your comfort zone.
Do Things Differently
What are some of the routine things that you consistently do on a daily or weekly basis?
Get up, go to work, eat the same types of foods, stick around the same types of people, go to the same types of vacation destinations.
As human beings we tend to seek out what's comfortable and shy away from many things that are new.
Staying in your comfort zone can create consistency and steady performance, but stepping out can create conditions for optimal performance.
Think about the last thing you did that was completely outside of your comfort zone.
It was likely because you was forced at work to speak at a big meeting, or something of that nature.
What's the last thing you did because you wanted to?
"In an increasingly competitive, cautious and accelerated world, those who are willing to takes risks, step out of their comfort zone and into the discomfort of uncertainty will be those who will reap the biggest rewards."
The benefits doing adding different experiences to your life is where you experience the most growth and fulfillment.
You've likely heard people say, "do something different" to break out your comfort zone.
But what does that mean or look like?
It means that you must consistently develop the habits of disrupting your own habits for growth and success.
Here are a few things you can do differently starting today:
- volunteer more to lead a group
- try a new restaurant or a new dish
- expand your networking and meet new peopole
- go to a new travel destination
- learn a new skill
- start a business
These things may seem simple but they are huge barriers to cross for many people who stick close to their comfort zone.
Doing new things doesn't mean it's good enough to just show up.
Rather you must show up with the expectation to learn something new and add that to your everyday life.
Do More of What You Fear
How can you become more comfortable and confident in the areas where ou have the most fear?
Things like public speaking, giving negative feedback, or networking.
Pretty simple..... do more of the things you fear the most.
We all constantly encounter opportunities that make us squirm when we're presented with them
As human beings, we fear most things that are new, things unknown to use or outside your comfort zone.
The reality is, the things you fear the most lives outside your comfort zone.
Outside your comfort zone lives your goals, dreams, and aspirations to change your life.
So how can you use the things you fear the most as fuel to break out of your comfort zone?
You must first start by asking yourself, "if I'm able to do this thing that I fear how will this benefit me?"
Let's look at a few scenarios:
You really want to start a business, but you FEAR sales and talking to people.
You really want to become a manager at your job, but you FEAR giving negative feedback.
You really want to become a public speaking, but you FEAR speaking in front of multiple people.
Will overcoming these fears get you closer to your goals?
Will they allow you to be more confident?
Of course they will!
The only way for you to get comfortable is by pushing through and doing these very things until you no longer fear them.
To make the process easier, you must do the following:
- know that it's not going to be easy
- you will make mistakes
- be willing to learn
- accept both good and bad feedback
Doing these things will not give you the happy path out of your comfort zone but will certainly make it a lot easier.
Start a Comfort Challenge
When you're trying to break out of your comfort zone, it's beneficial to get a little unconventional.
People don't like doing things differently because the fear of failure, looking stupid, or being judged.
This type of thinking will hold you back from achieving and experiencing more success in your life.
Things like asking for a raise, starting a business, or taking your bucket list vacation will not happen unless you get out of your comfort zone.
How do you get out the "stuck in your comfort zone" rut?
There are small tings you can do to gain confidence, get over unnecessary fears, and experience more success in your life.
To help me get over some comfort zone issues I was faced with, I joined a personal development program.
There I learned a couple of challenge games to help me:
- Stranger Challenge
- Coffee Challenge
Both of these challenges will help you learn ore about yourself and experience more growth.
The Stranger Challenge
This challenge will push you to do things that you wouldn't normally do on a daily basis.
From things like going up to someone and ask for their phone number, high-five a random person, take a selfie with a group of strangers.
I actually did this in the mall on a Saturday intentionally when it was crowded and I can be at my highest level of fear.
The Coffee Challenge
Here you'll go to your favorite coffee shop, purchase a coffee and ask for a 10% discount.
Really doesn't matter if you get a yes or not, the benefits is the act of you asking.
As silly as it may sound, but when you take on these challenges you learn some key things about yourself.
- how to use your courage to complete a task
- ability to not focus on the result (who cares about yes or no)
- feel fear, but doing something awkward anyway
- learn how differently people react
The feeling of fear and anxiety that you feel during these challenges is what you will face starting a business.
When you go on a critical sales meeting.
These challenges will help you simulate the feeling of those situations and allow you to internally know how to deal with them.
Getting stuck in a routine is very easy to do and at times very hard to get out of.
What you do today is engraved in you through years of your family history.
How you think, what you do, what you say, the type of career you chose, and how you view money has been passed down to you.
The problem with that is you have your own individual goals and those things can hold you back and leave you stuck.
So in order for you to break out of your comfort zone, you're going to have to implement some best practices to get you there.
It's critical that you develop the habit of doing different things, embracing your fears, keep and update your goals.
Disruptive ideas and innovation is more likely to come to you when you're thinking outside the box.
Doing the same things we've always done leads to a plummeting creative mind.
As a business owner or side hustler you must get comfortable with journey of stepping outside your comfort zone.
